Judah's family has been struck gruesome tragedy. His oldest son Er beeing married to Tamar has been killed by God. God killed him, because God thought he was wicked.
According for local tradition, strongly encouraged by Judah, his second son Onan was supposed to sleep with Er's wife. He did so, but he was not willing to bring her babies - as he suspected they will not be his own - so he performed coitus interrupted and spilled his semen outside. God claimed this has been evil, so he killed him for it.
With 2 son dead, Judah worried that his third son might be killed as well, so he refused to follow tradition and he did sent Tamar away.
Altough very strange situation for Tamar came later when she got pregnant with her father in law - Judah. She successfully delivered twin boys. Again, one more twisted family.
